TCC X AURATE

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST COLLAB

I'm so excited to show you all this project - the intricacy of the design, I have to say, is some of my best. This is because of the beautiful jewelry Aurate, my collab partner, has to offer. Below I'll get into more of the story telling behind the design, but before this limited edition piece runs out - check out the scarf here.
I worked closely with the Aurate team to design a piece that artfully took their jewelry and turned it into a textile, but also told a deeper story. In our initial meetings, I learned about the origin story ofAurate. The founder, Sophie, looked down at her expensive ring while having coffee at Cafe Gitane in NYC and realized it has left a stain on her finger - it was not something she expected for what she invested in it.This is where her idea forAuratecame from: she wanted to have a reliable source of jewelry that would last and actually reflect what she was paying for. It's been 10 years since this idea became a reality, and so for this celebration, they decided to make a silk scarf. And the best part - jewelry & silk scarves are a match made in heaven - turning the silk scarf into a shirt, shawl & more in an even more sophisticated way.

Draft 1

I wanted to have the buildings form this "A" in a subtle way as a nod to the brand. I also wanted to include Cafe Gitane to speak to the origin story of the exact place where Aurate was thought of. The asymmetry here was too extreme, so we moved on from this.

Draft 2

The second option was to provide a more symmetrical version. I used the umbrellas from Cafe Gitane to make another frame. We were getting closer with this option, but it was still feeling a bit empty.

Draft 3

This is where we start to see the development going in the right direction as we layered in more jewelry. Since the corners of the scarf are the most visible, we wanted to give it an iconic element - so we took inspiration from the Chrysler building and put those on the corners. Still. It wasn't quite right - it sort of looked like a big X. So we iterated.

The Final Design

We landed on this. We brought down the colors to make it more of a fall / winter piece. We got rid of the 'X', made by the spires of the Chrysler building. And in a happy accident, we realized that the new arrangement of the Chryslers ending at the orangey tennis bracelet frame in the center ended up looking like a set diamond.
